Snapchat Memories Goes Paid: Users Will Now Pay for Extra Storage
Snapchat has announced that its Memories feature, which has been free since 2016, will now require payment for users who exceed 5GB of storage. The platform will continue to offer 5GB of storage at no cost, but any additional data will require a subscription.
Snapchat Memories: What’s Changing and Why
The Memories feature allows users to save photos and videos for long-term access, rather than just temporarily. Until now, this service was completely free. With the new policy, Snapchat will provide only 5GB of free storage, and users exceeding this limit must subscribe to a paid plan to store additional content.
New Paid Plans and Pricing
According to Snapchat, the paid storage service will roll out gradually worldwide. TechCrunch reports that the plans will include:
- 100GB for $1.99/month (approximately ₹176)
- 250GB for $3.99/month (approximately ₹354)
Existing users with more than 5GB of stored content will receive 12 months of temporary access and the option to download their data before subscribing.
User Backlash
The announcement has sparked criticism on social media. Many users have called the move unfair and opportunistic. Snapchat, however, defended the decision, noting that transitioning from a free service to a paid model is never an easy process.
Experts Predict More Paid Features
Industry experts believe that charging for storage on social media platforms may become more common in the near future. It remains to be seen whether Snapchat’s strategy will succeed or if users will seek alternative solutions.
